Early Years Foundation Stage
Wingate International School’s Early Years Foundation Stage accommodates children from 3 months old within the academic year. Ranging from:
- Creche (3 months – 1 year)
- Playgroup (1 – 2 years)
- Pre-Nursery (2 – 3 years)
- Nursery (3 – 4 years)
- Reception (4 – 5 years)
Innovative teaching and learning methods and fun filled activities within the framework of the UK’s Early Years programme are employed. We create an environment that makes learning exciting, stress-free, safe and secure, leading to a smooth transition from home to school.
We strive to create an enabling environment in which scholars feel included, secure and valued. An environment where scholars build on already-existing knowledge and know how. An environment where the scholar’s beliefs, language and ethnicity are celebrated. An environment where scholars have the opportunity to engage in self-initiated tasks, adult led activities and creative play with the goal to provide progression in learning from the EYFS to year 1.
Our aim in WIS Early Years Foundation Stage is to have scholars learn and obtain the specific skills they need to be able to reach the highest possible educational standards as they progress through their school careers.
In Wingate International School, our EYFS runs the British-based curriculum which is based on the National Curriculum for England and Whales with appropriate modifications to suit the National context in Nigeria. The curriculum seeks to meet the personalized learning needs of all scholars.
The curriculum in WIS is broken down into the 7 learning and development areas which are:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development: This area helps to shape scholar’s social skills and develop respect and understanding of their different feelings.
- Physical Development: This area takes into consideration the need for scholar’s continued physical activity as well as the importance of healthy food choices.
- Communication and Language: This provides an environment for scholars to express themselves, speaking and listening in a range of situations which allows them to develop their language and communication skills.
- Literacy: discovering phonemic awareness plays a key role in reading and writing. Scholars develop the ability to hear and identify sounds and decode words using the sounds.
- Mathematics: This area guides scholars to develop skills with numbers and calculations as well as being able to describe shapes, space and measures.
- Understanding the World: This area exposes scholars to make sense of things by observing and exploring everything from different places and technology.
- Expressive Art and Design: This area exposes scholars to self-expression through activities such as drawing, playing with paint, instruments and technology.
The implementation of the 7 learning and development areas above is achieved through the use of the four guiding principles of the EYFS.
- Uniqueness of every child.
- Every child can learn to be independent through positive relationship.
- Scholars learn and develop best in an enabling environment.
- Scholars learn in different ways and at different pace.
WIS acts in accordance with the internationally approved Learning Goals
In WIS, our teachers are highly trained to explore the three learning styles taking into consideration the uniqueness of each learner. We have appropriate resources to support teaching and learning that will help learners develop the needed skills expected in all learning areas.
Our EYFS complex is built to cater for the scholar’s hygiene needs with spacious en-suited classrooms, air conditioners and air purifiers. We have a safe learning environment with CCTV cameras to monitor day-to-day activities.
To ensure the health, safety and wholeness of our scholars, we follow strict safety measures with daily inspection of scholars and their properties to guarantee the highest level of hygienic state and a swift follow up with parents or guardians is done where the need arises. Care giving is a priority in WIS Early Years Foundation Stage and we have passionate personnel who see to the all-round well-being of our scholars.
